“What if a demon were to creep after you one night, in your loneliest loneliness, and say, 'This life which you live must be lived by you once again and innumerable times more; and every pain and joy and thought and sigh must come again to you, all in the same sequence. The eternal hourglass will again and again be turned and you with it, dust of the dust!' Would you throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse that demon? Or would you answer, 'Never have I heard anything more divine'?”
Friedrich Nietzsche quotes

btw this song grows on you. not one of them u love as soon as u hear it the first time.

  1. Thought-provoking quote!

Would I like to live my life all over again?

Looked at one way, the quote could be taken as an exhortation to live a life that one can be proud of.

But taken in a literal sense, there is a problem with the question - many parts of our life are not in our hands - especially before we are adults (and to some degree even after we grow up).

So the question, in a literal sense, is not a moral question - the answer depends on each person's unique circumstance.

Btw, I enjoy reading your blog, I like your sense of life :-).

    ps. Another interesting Nietzche quote:

"It is some basic certainty which the noble soul has about itself, something which does not allow itself to be sought out or found or perhaps even to be lost. The noble soul has reverence for itself."

  2. i think it means that everything in ur life remains the same. doesnt it say, every pain and joy and blah blah? so everything wud be exactly the same and would you live it again?

thats the question. I think its a moral q not an exhortation to live a better life. coz u wud have already lived ur life by the time u'd be asked this q and knowing how you've lived till now, wud u ever consider repeating it. u know, knowing the joys and the pain , etc etc.

    nice quote. me likes.

  4. Hmm..

The answers to the demon's question is either joy (yes) or sorrow (no), and let's assume you would say yes only if your
life's experience was positive (masochists may differ :-)).

What I was pointing out was that if you had little control over how your life unfolded..then there is no "moral" component to the question - because you had no choice in the matter. (or to paraphrase
Ayn Rand, "morality presupposes free will").

..don't worry, I'm not going to stalk you, I gather from your posts that we are not even in the same state (oops ;-) ).

i'll agree with you. coz i basically don't believe in arguing. since i believe all arguments are based on differences in definition of words or concepts. [ a total cowards way out i'm sure but thats it ]. so i completely agree with what you say.

  6. Who am I?

Zed: You'll dress only in attire specially sanctioned by MiB special services. You'll conform to the identity we give you, eat where we tell you, live where we tell you. From now on you'll have no identifying marks of any kind. You'll not stand out in any way. Your entire image is crafted to leave no lasting memory with anyone you encounter. You're a rumor, recognizable only as deja vu and dismissed just as quickly. You don't exist; you were never even born. Anonymity is your name. Silence your native tongue. You're no longer part of the System. You're above the System. Over it. Beyond it. We're "them." We're "they."

We are...the Men in Black. ;-)
    (god, I loved that movie!)

btw, have you seen "Groundhog Day"?? - totally related to the question you posted.

    ps. What's at 4:23??

pps. "Cacofonix"..don't read too much into it, just the first name that popped into my head (I loved Asterix comics growing up).
